The Bank Diaries (1919)

2025-07-18

Here you can find an index of the names of prominent (and otherwise) people and organisations near the town and county of Lincoln (England) who banked with the The London Joint City and Midland Bank (LJC&M Bank) in 1919.

This list was compiled from the first of two diaries that were purchased in July 2025 and is a work in progress, so do please keep coming back.

To illustrate some of the interesting things you can find in these diaries, here is an entry for the 3rd of January, 1919 showing some of the struggles farmers in the local area faced.

Mr G.T. Marriner said that he is not very well satisified with the results of his farming in the past year and he does not see his way to reduce his account much without giving up. He hopes the Bank will give him further time. He has bought, in the past year, a little more land which improves his property. He says his farm is well stocked. He has 300/400 tons of potatoes which he is selling at £6.10/- per ton; 3 stacks still to thrash, 99 heast?, 367 sheep and 30 horses. See correspondence with H.O. (Head Office)

And one more for a military man heading abroad, on the 11th of January, 1919.

Captain Keeley called to say he was leaving for India shortly and that he should close his ordinary current account, and asked us to pay any money received to the credit of his War Loan, advising him each half year of the state of the latter.

To search the list, either use Control-F (Windows) or Command-F (Mac) and type in the name that you are interested in. Try various spellings because my transcription might not be perfect, yet! Against each name is the date of the entry or entries that name was mentioned.

If you are interested in knowing what was written about any person or organisation, please do contact me, letting me know the name and date(s) against their name. Transcribing the actual entries of the diary may take some time so won’t appear here soon but I can always look things up. My email address can be found at the bottom of the page.
